Recap: 90 Day Fiance: Before The 90 Days

By  |

This week on 90-Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days, several Americans traveled internationally to meet people for the first time after dating them online.

Sean, 47, of Springfield, Ohio landed in Haiti to meet his girlfriend Abby, a 20-year old woman who lives with her parents. “I want an older man, someone who can guide me,” she explained. The only thing standing in the way of their relationship, beyond her parent’s justifiable concerns and U.S. Immigration policies, was the lurking presence of Abby’s ex-boyfriend, a 64-year-old man named Chris. This troubled Sean, why am I invested thousands of dollars and time into our relationship when you have someone 40 years older than you waiting in the wings? As Abby explained it to her friends, she enjoyed a friendship with Chris, even though it was obvious they had nothing in common outside of the fact he wanted to have sex with her and she liked having him buy her things.

“I will be seeing you in a little bit, baby,” Sean said in a video message half way through the flight. He was eager to land so he could place the woman he had only seen in photos and garbled video conferencing in his waif-like arms. Upon his arrival Abby became overcome with emotion as her friend Vanessa stood behind her. She held Sean, as one would when reunited with their parents after sleep away camp. “I love you, you are my life, and you are my everything,” he told her although in the car ride home he seemed to know little about her life. When driving past a school she noted she was just about to take her final exams. “You are?” he asked while staring in disbelief at the city’s squalid conditions. She assured him that although she had a friend who was a retiree who vacations in the Dominion Republic he was really her true love. “I love you to the moon and back,” he whispered. “I love you like mashed potatoes,” she strangely replied.

Darcey, 42, of Middletown, Connecticut left her three kids for six weeks so she could finally meet in person her 24-year old Norwegian personal trainer boyfriend Jesse. She admitted before leaving that her profile on the international dating app featured a photo of her slimmer and ten years younger. Despite this she was sure they were soulmates and she would most likely return an engaged woman. “The age difference is not a problem for me,” she explained.  “After being divorced for six years, this is an exciting time for me.”

After a stint in the military, Jesse explained to producers, he used his dominance and discipline to purse a career in exercise sciences. Though he enjoyed looking at his reflection in gym mirrors and notably waxed, styled, and dyed his own eyebrows he insisted he was not a vain person. Darcey’s pictures were what attracted him, though he insisted he wanted someone of substance. He prepared for her lengthy stay by shopping for flowers, champagne, and most importantly extra toilet paper. “I don’t know how much she uses,” he reasoned. His nagging concern was whether they would have chemistry. “I have had situations with females where they would be absolutely amazing, but the smell wasn’t right. You know, the pheromones weren’t matching, and that can be a problem.” To prevent this issue he outfitted his bathroom with various perfumes, candles, and statues. He gave her a cubby to accommodate her “panties.”

While having drinks with friends the night before her arrival he swiped through photos she had sent him of her face and breasts. “Pictures are not always real,” his friend warned him. “Do you think she expects proposal-ing?” Yes, she did, Jesse explained. “I am sure she expects it.” He did nothing to diminish their concerns by adding she was divorced and had two children. They were all pretty certain she would get pregnant before she left.

After landing she nervously applied wrinkle cream and tester foundation in the duty-free shop. Her new heels got stuck in the escalator causing a 60-minute security issue and delay. She sprayed herself with room spray and pushed her luggage cart into his arms.

Jesse greeted her with an armful of flowers and a homemade sign bearing his face incase she couldn’t find him in the sea of people standing at the entry tunnel outside the luggage return. He was immediately impressed with her clothes and unreasonably long weave. “I love your hair,” he said, unaware it was just glued to her head days before. She looked at the floor, licked her lips, and held him tight. Though he appeared to look as he did in various photo texts he sent to her in the previous few weeks she held out hope he wasn’t actually a serial killer. She loved the way he dressed like a sprocket. He didn’t notice she was wearing what appeared to be a yellow diamond on her engagement finger.

Paul, 34, of Louisville, Kentucky was nervous to leave the United States to meet his online girlfriend Karine from Brazil’s Amazon basin. After a 17-hour flight and two days spent in a boat floating up a river he would meet the woman he communicated with via a translator app. Though she lived in a hut with her sister without consistent running water or electricity she somehow was able to get a Wi-Fi signal. He brought with him on this trip clothes, a water filtration system, medical supplies, and a lock of his mother’s hair.

Once he landed he slipped on a mosquito suit and asked the cab driver with broken sign language to take him to a loading dock. “I am not proficient in Portuguese,” Paul explained after mistakenly telling the driver he loved him. He was at least honest about the roadblocks he faced in his quest for love. “In the Amazon you have to worry about disease, weather conditions, and cartels,” he said.

After Brazilian police officers rummaged through four of his trunks, police dogs smelled his cough drop supply, several days spent sweating profusely on a river boat, and two sleepless nights covered in netting he arrived in Karine’s hometown only to find she was not there to greet him. He wondered if not having a proper signal was the problem. Maybe she was unaware after months of prep that he would be standing in oversized all-terrain pants waiting for her, hungry, homesick, and worried he would inevitably end up heartsick? Or perhaps she was just stuck in traffic on a dirt road or caught up in conversation with someone holding a machete?

All looked off into the distance and clutched his test; he still had a secret Karine would at some point need to know. Then again would it matter if she never showed up?

Jesse won’t change his Facebook status, Abby gets 50 pairs of underwear, and Paul goes on a manhunt.

Oooh! I’ve wondered about this part of the fairy tales. Great recap, Kate! It’s enough for me to give the show a try.

    it was hilarious.
I’m sure someone has the answer to this as I missed it, but why the eff does Paul have appx 800lbs of shit in trunks with him? He’s built like he can barely handle a small child’s backpack while traveling thru Disneyland let alone a full on Pod while ‘alone’ in the friggin Amazon. And my hubby gets on MY ass for over-packing….jeez!

He seems obsessive compulsive and a germaphobe etc. I think he’s paranoid about catching diseases. He brought tons of meds, food and medical supplies. I agree it was really overkill. I can’t imagine traveling with all that crap.

Paul has more than heavy baggage to deal with. Besides being a germaphobic… the swimming scene was hysterical and Karine sees he is neurotic… he has a felony conviction for arson here in the states as well as other troubles with the law.. who in their right mind wants to deal with anperson like him… Only someone who can’t speak the language and is young and naive.. I hope Karine finds out sooner than later….

It’s ironic that Paul is putting himself in more danger by brining so much life-saving equipment.

I also noticed that he didn’t even know she had finals…. your relationship is already weird but now we knows it ain’t that solid either.
